A report from the NSW Titles held in Maitland on 19 Feb 05

The wild thunderstorm exposed our inexperience in wet weather; we allowed ourselves to pull in the centre track slop, thus allowing Macquarie to squirm of the hook after we had them inches from the line twice. Smarter pulls against Maitland were successful although we were quite ragged.

Our footwork and technique were pretty good considering the woeful conditions. We need to practice absorbing opposition heaves through the knees and not through the back which will put us in a good position to answer with interest.

Remember: Practice makes perfect! Use your training rope often! Another lesson from Maitland – general, overall fitness is crucial. We are a new, inexperienced team competing against teams that have been in the game a long time, we cannot afford to concede on either strength or aerobic fitness. Keep up the swimming, walking, weight training, whatever you need to maintain your fitness.

Unlike our namesakes ‘Canterbury’, or the ‘Newcastle Knights’ the BrisbaneBulldogs did not attract the attention of the local constabulary and were all tucked in to their beds by midnight still sober.

Our new uniforms looked terrific and brought out the parochialism in the Maitland crowd. Even though the crowd was loudly against us it made for a great atmosphere.

Welcome to Simon and Ben, this could be the beginning of a Maori takeover (we hope!)Welcome also to Tevae who has come all the way from the Cook Islands to join us.
